martin puryear makes finely crafted wood sculptures that would be at home in a natural history museum. they have features that give the suggestion of function in some past time or familiarity to functional objects. i enjoyed walking around them and peering up at them as they disappeared into the brightness of the skylighted ceilings. in addition to being curiously familiar, they must have required some engineering to appear at times to float or hang delicately and weightlessly.
